Motor and home cover is for a vehicle or property in India and is taken in your name.
What it is
Motor insurance for a vehicle registered in India (third-party cover is required by law; own-damage cover is optional), home insurance for the structure and contents of a house or flat, personal accident cover, and travel insurance for your visits home. The policies are the same ones residents buy; what differs is that you aren't there.
Who it's for
Anyone who owns a vehicle or property in India, or whose family drives their car, and anyone visiting India who wants accident and medical cover for the trip.
What it needs from abroad
The registration certificate and previous policy for a vehicle; the property address and a valuation for a home. A family member in India can handle inspection and claims with an authorisation letter or power of attorney; the power of attorney guide covers the latter.
Risks and catches
A lapsed motor policy means an uninsured car on the road and a fine for whoever is driving. Home contents claims need proof of ownership. Add-ons such as zero depreciation change the premium and the claim noticeably.
